For a Valentine’s Day that is big on sustainable development but maybe a little lacking in roses, head for Top Withens on the moors above Ogden Water, near Halifax. Not only can you admire renewable energy in action but there’s also a pub nearby, surrounded by snow, ice, gorse, rocks and pretty much nothing else.

February is the month of the ‘worst weather in 18 years’ according to misinterpreted national newspaper reports of Met Office announcements, to the extent that it is now ‘snow joke’ according to a tired old newspaper headline that has also not been seen for a long while now (thankfully). February is also National Heart Month according to the British Heart Foundation. And while the nation’s landscape has gone white, the BHF is encouraging us all to ‘go red’ in the fight against heart and circulatory disease, which it says claims 200,000 lives every year. National Heart Month is also the charity’s chance to raise people’s awareness of how to look after their hearts. You would hope that at some point during this month the hearts connection might be promoted by linking in with Valentine’s Day and maybe couples could contribute to the cause rather than staring over single-rose dressed tables for an evening. One of the easiest ways to support National Heart Month, among many others of course, is to sponsor this particular runner in the London Marathon, someone who is currently treading the ice-covered pavements of Nottingham in the full realisation that it is snow-joke out there.
